Action Plan
This shows that together we can get to success as a community.
Our plan is to eliminate traffic involved with lack of parking in
downtown Westfield, and to have our crossing guards deal with traffic in a safer
manner. We will do this by building a parking garage in downtown Westfield.
There are many people who would love this policy! The biggest people in
particular would be the town’s people, and local businesses. Increased parking
will make traffic flow smoother, and will cause more traffic in businesses. It
will hopefully make more money for local businesses. The problem with this is
being able to get the attention of these people. With all of their support, we
can lobby for a parking garage, but we need to inform them of this! My idea is
that we can make a petition! We can go around home to home, business to
business, and hopefully get them to sign their name in support of our plan. We
will show them statistics of other town who have increased their parking and as
a result, better business. We will also show them how it will eliminate traffic,
and make everybody trip across Westfield safer and smoother. Although this
sounds like a great plan, there have to be some people who oppose this. The
people we hypothesize that will oppose this plan are apartment owners. There are
many people who live downtown, and complain about the loud and busy streets.
Adding a parking garage will increase the people and noise. If I was an
apartment owner right next to a giant parking garage, all of the noise would
drive me insane after a while. The way that we can solve this problem is making
noise reduction walls for the parking garage. This way, any noise from honking
or yelling or crying will stay inside of the parking garage, and keep the
neighbors happy and stress free. Our group strongly feels that traffic is a
huge problem in downtown Westfield, and we would like to do everything in our
power to stop the problem. We came up with this idea, and thought is was a good
plan to eliminate traffic. We hope people feel the same way. There are many different ways that our class could develop support by our government for our proposed policy. One of the big ways would be to write a petition. If we were to actually do this, I and my group members would go door to door throughout Westfield and ask the townspeople to look over our plan. We would also go to local businesses inside downtown for their opinion. Our goal would to get the majority of the people we visit to sign their name, in hope we could convince our local government to build a parking garage. The perfect influential government official or agency which might be willing to support our plan is the parking police. Downtown Westfield is a mad house in the afternoon! Cars are beeping everywhere, people are fighting over parking spots, and the traffic is terrible. The parking police in downtown Westfield must hate seeing all of the chaos. I am sure they have their own mixed opinions about the traffic, but I am sure that all of the parking officers will like this solution to the traffic problem. It makes their job easier and everybody’s day smoother and stress free. Although this plan seems to be a great one, there are definitely going to be people who oppose this policy; especial government officials. People who would oppose this would be the police department. By building a parking garage, this will allow everybody to have a legal parking spot, and they will lose all the money they make by ticketing people for illegal parking. Although this is a bad thing, it is better for the people. They can still charge for over timed meters. The town will be losing money, but it won’t be significant. I think that we can convince them this by showing statistics of other towns that have increased parking, and the money they have lost and if it is significant. I hope that they will understand. Parking and traffic involved with it has always been a problem in Westfield, and according to our survey, almost 90 percent of the people we surveyed have been stressed out with the traffic or have been late to something. This is a problem and it needs to change. I think that our groups plan is a great start!
